Australia Day. Where Australians (and honorary Australians) come together to celebrate this great land. Where BBQ’s, beaches, and beers rule, and thongs are donned by all.

Without question beer - arguably the nation’s national drink - is the prime ingredient in any Australia Day get-together. But what if you aren’t a beer drinker? No worries mate! We've collected five beer-based cocktails to ensure you don’t lose your Aussie ‘cred’ round the BBQ this year.

 


1.  The Aussie Sailor

With more than enough rum to cover the fact you're not drinking beer, this sea-worthy number will help your party set sail!

Aussie Sailor Beer Cocktail


You’ll need:

  • 1 part golden rum

  • 1 part Aperol

  • 1.5 parts pineapple juice

  • 1 part lychee liqueur

  • 3 x shakes of Angostura Bitters

  • Top up with Coopers Pale Ale

Method:

  1.  Put the rum, Aperol, pineapple juice, lychee liqueur and bitters in a shaker with ice.

  2.  Shake hard for 30 seconds.

  3.  Pour into a half pint mug.

  4.  Drop in four or five ice cubes.

  5.  Top up with Coopers Pale Ale.

  6.  Garnish with maraschino cherry.

Michelada

It might be Australia Day but that doesn’t mean the beer has to be Australian! Why not spice things up with this Mexican Bloody Mary.

Michelada Cocktail


You’ll need:

  • 1 1/2 cups beer (recommend Corona or Modela)

  • 1 1/2 cups clamato

  • 1/4 cup lime juice (~2 limes)

  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 1/2 tsp hot sauce

  • 1 tsp soy sauce

  • Fresh ground pepper

  • Ice

  • Salt for rim

Method:

  1.  Add all ingredients to a pitcher and stir to combine.

  2.  Wet rims of glasses and dip in salt.

  3.  Pour micheladas into glasses, dust with fresh ground pepper, garnish with a lime slice if desired.

3. Australian Lemonade

After something a little 'lighter' to start off the festivities? You can’t go wrong with this traditional Aussie shandy made with real lemons.

You’ll need:

  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice

  • 1 Tablespoon sugar, or to taste

  • 3/4 cup water (or sparkling water for more fizz)

  • 3/4 cup beer

  • Ice

  • Lemon slices for garnish (optional)

  • Makes one serve

Method:

  1.  Combine the lemon juice, sugar and water and stir to combine.

  2.  Add ice and then pour the beer over the lemon mixture and stir gently to combine.

  3.  Garnish with lemon slices, if desired.

4.  Beer Punch

While the name may conjure up images of a backyard BBQ gone wrong, this beer punch recipe is the exact opposite: laidback and refreshing.

You’ll need:

  • Large pitcher or bowl

  • 350ml Sprite

  • 2 ½ cups of pineapple juice

  • 6 bottles or cans of your preferred beer

  • Sliced lemons/limes/oranges to suit

Method:

  1.  Stir together in large pitcher or bowl

  2.  Garnish as required

5.  Endless Byron Summer

With a bang to rival the fireworks, this vodka-beer combo is sure to take the evening festivities up a notch.

Endless Byron Bay Summer Cocktail


You’ll need:

  • 150mL XXXX Summer Bright Lager

  • 30mL Vodka

  • 1/2 Lime juiced

  • 60mL Coconut Water

  • 15mL Agave Nectar

Method:

  1.  Squeeze the lime into a highball glass.

  2.  Add Vodka, coconut water and agave nectar and fill all the way to the top with ice.

  3.  Add XXXX Summer Bright Lager, stir and garnish.
